Johnson City Schools is one of 41 districts across Tennessee to earn Level 5 distinction for the 2021-2022 school year and one of 23 districts across Tennessee that scored a Level 5 for both the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school years. Johnson City Schools also had six schools reach the honor of Level 5 including Fairmont Elementary, Lake Ridge Elementary, Johnson City Virtual Academy, Liberty Bell Middle School, Indian Trail Middle School and Science Hill High School.

“We are proud of our district and schools that earned this recognition from the state,” Johnson City Schools Superintendent Steve Barnett said. “These results affirm that our teachers and strategies are helping our students grow academically from year-to-year. Our primary academic indicator is achievement data, and we are pleased with our growth in academic achievement and value-added.”  

In total, there were 544 Level 5 schools across Tennessee’s 146 public school districts. The Johnson City Virtual Academy, which accommodates students in grades 6-12, was one of six public virtual schools to receive Level 5 recognition.

TVAAS is a statistical analysis of student assessment data from the TCAP end-of-grade and end-of-course tests. TVAAS is used to measure the amount of academic progress a student makes from year-to-year. This lens of measuring student learning provides educators with valuable information to ensure they are meeting the academic needs of cohorts of students as well as individual students. The system is rated on a scale of 1-5 with level one indicating evidence students made significantly less growth than expected, while a level 5 indicates evidence that students made significantly more growth than expected.

South Side Elementary and Mountain View Elementary finished as Level 4 composite schools, which means students made more growth than expected.
